How To: Archery Bow Grip

an archer showing how to hold the bow

Archery is a sport that has been around for centuries. It requires skill, practice, and accuracy to shoot an arrow and hit the target. The bow grip is one of the most important aspects of shooting an arrow. It is the point where you connect with the bow and it is crucial that you have a good grip so that you can shoot with accuracy.

How To Hold Your Bow

Proper form and fundamentals are key to success in archery. When gripping the bow, you want to ensure that you have a good, solid foundation. To do this, form a V with your thumb and index finger and draw a line from the radial crease to the radial bone. This will give you a good grip on the bow and help you shoot with accuracy.

Depending on the bow’s grip angle, you should apply pressure to either the top of the hand (top of the V) or to the bottom of the hand (wrist). Try out a few different pressure zones to see what works for your bow.

Another easy suggestion is to grip your bow and apply pressure in line with your hands’ lifeline. Also consider using a bow sling, which will help take the pressure off your grip and allow you to focus on your shot.

Let Finger Rest Naturally

Draw your bow back and let your fingers rest naturally. Good hand positions have your pinky and ring finger off to the side, while your index fingertip and middle finger rest on the front side of the riser.

By using too strong of a grip, you create pressure points on the riser and have trouble aligning your elbows correctly, not to mention inconsistencies left and right. Relax your hand and let your fingers rest.

Repeat and Repeat

Archery is all about repetition. Some hunters shoot 20-30 arrows per week to become proficient, while champions shoot 150-250 arrows per day. The key is to find what works for you and to practice, practice, practice.

The better you get at shooting, the more important proper form and a good grip become. Remember to focus on your grip, hand position, and pressure points. With enough practice, you’ll be hitting your target in no time.

Archery Bow Grip Tape

Many archers use grip tape to help them keep a consistent grip on their bow. This can be helpful, especially if you are shooting in humid or wet conditions. Grip tape comes in a variety of colors and textures, so find one that works for you and practice with it.

Take the grip off the bow, place one end of the tape under the grip area, then put the grip back on the bow and screw it in. When you start wrapping, you can pull taut because the grip is holding the starting end. Don’t wrap into the throat of the grip.

Archery Bow Handle

What´s the archery bow handle? The riser is sometimes referred to as the archery bow handle. The bow handle is the central part of the bow to which the other parts are attached. The handle is where you grip the bow, and it´s important to have a comfortable grip that feels good in your hand. You don´t want a grip that´s too small or too large – it should be just right.

Summary

Archery is a sport that requires skill, practice, and accuracy. The bow grip is one of the most important aspects of shooting an arrow. It is the point where you connect with the bow and it is crucial that you have a good grip so that you can shoot with accuracy.

Don´t apply too much pressure on the bow as this will make it difficult to shoot accurately. Instead, relax your hand and let your fingers rest naturally on the bow.
